My most surprising Bangkok stay: an exceptional suite upgrade, a brilliant breakfast and room to unwind.
How I ended up staying here
A viewer suggested that I look at The Sukhothai, and I found a 40,000-point Hilton Honors redemption at the time of my stay. I was travelling in a quieter period and, as a Diamond member, I was upgraded from the room I booked into a one-bedroom suite. That upgrade made the visit extraordinary, but I would not assume every guest will receive the same room.
A calm Bangkok retreat
From the moment I arrived, the hotel felt more like a grand residence than a standard city hotel. The welcome, cold towels and genuinely warm service set the tone. My suite was expansive, full of reflective details and wonderfully comfortable. Looking out at the city, I still felt tucked away in a peaceful, leafy oasis.
Breakfast, pool and spa
Breakfast was one of the best hotel buffets I have tried in Bangkok: a wide choice of Thai and Western dishes, fresh noodles made to order, pastries, fruit, smoothies and excellent Thai milk tea. The pool was huge, with plenty of loungers and tropical planting. I also loved seeing the spa in its traditional-style buildings, and the gym had a sauna, steam room and plunge pool.
My verdict
I would choose The Sukhothai when I wanted space, attentive service and a slower, resort-like stay, especially with family or for a special trip. It is not the base I would choose if I wanted to be right by Sukhumvit nightlife. My room and points rate were from the visit in my video, so check current redemption and upgrade terms.
